Westerlay Orchids Participates in 10th annual Carpinteria Greenhouse & Nursery Tour
Along with five other local nurseries, Westerly Orchids will participate in the 10th annual Carpinteria Greenhouse & Nursery Tour on Saturday, April 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Expert growers who will share their knowledge of greenhouse cultivation will lead the free tours.
Tour attendees will have the opportunity to see eco-conscious advancements in the nursery industry such as Westerlay’s newly installed system for recapturing irrigation, that reduces water use by 30 percent. “The environment inside our greenhouses is tightly controlled. We monitor everything from nutrients to temperature, light and moisture at each phase of growth,” said Toine Overgaag, president of Westerlay Orchids. “My family has been doing this for decades, and I’m still fascinated.”
One hundred percent of proceeds from orchid sales in the Westerlay showroom for the week leading up to the event, April 9 to April 14, will be donated to the Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF) who will administer the money to Aliso Elementary School to fund art programs through the Children's Creative Project.
